Doha: Former Emir of Qatar and father of the country’s current ruler, Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Sheikh Khalifa bin Hamad Al Thani, has died at the age of 84.
The Amiri Diwan confirmed his death through an official statement issued on Sunday. In the statement, the Diwan remembered the late Sheikh Khalifa as a leader who made significant contributions to the nation and prayed for eternal peace for his soul.
Following the death of the former emir, current Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani has announced a three-day period of national mourning across Qatar. During this period, the national flag will be flown at half-mast as a mark of respect.
Sheikh Khalifa bin Hamad Al Thani served as Qatar’s ruler from 1972 to 1995, playing a key role in shaping the country’s early modern development. His legacy remains associated with major national transformations and institutional growth during his leadership.
